For my son's daycare party today, I made creepy crawly spider cupcakes.
Super easy to make:
Just make regular cupcakes with a thin layer of icing
Sprinkle with edible confetti sprinkles
Skittles for the eyes
and....
plastic bracelets cut in half for the legs! Yep, bracelets.
You can get several colors in a package for $1.
Why not something edible?
Normally, I'd use the Twizzler ropes, but these are children in the 2 to 3 year old range.
I'm not sure they wouldn't choke on them and they don't need any more sugar anyway, right?
So they'll get to see the cute spiders, but the legs will be taken off before they eat them.
And these aren't perfect. They are messy and meant to be. Kinda creepy... kinda crawly. I'm making these for a group of boys so they'll love that they aren't perfect.
Another option for the eyes that I hoped to use but didn't have on hand: use the white chocolate meltaway disks as the "whites" of the eyes. Then use a chocolate chip or skittle in the middle for the pupil. Stand them up in the front of the cupcake. MUCH greater impact. Bummed that I didn't have them on hand like I thought I did.
For treats, my son is giving his friends pumpkin flashlights. Walmart had these for $1 each and included batteries! More fun than candy!
